As Australia fell to a crushing defeat by an innings and 132 runs in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, R Ashwin notched his 31st Test five-fer.
Australia was turned over after lunch as the spinners once again took control, this time being led by their offspinner who hadn't gotten a five-fer in ten previous Tests after India's lower order had extended their first innings lead to 223 in the morning session.
In contrast to the first innings, where he was added as the fifth bowler, Ashwin was called on to lead the attack this time. And the move quickly paid off as Usman Khawaja was caught at slip after Ashwin duped him into a second cover drive in the over. If Virat Kohli had managed to maintain a legal take at slip, Ashwin might have been able to get Warner, the other left-handed opener, early as well. He had to wait a little longer, though, as Warner drove him for back-to-back boundaries before LBWing him with a ball that was coming right at him from the wicket's edge. Warner's review was ineffective since DRS determined that it had clipped the leg stump.
Between these takedowns, India struck from the other end as well, with Ravindra Jadeja capturing Marnus Labuschagne exactly in front after the batsman was found guilty of reversing a turner.
